Don't buy it already made just yet, instead just follow a plan to build a platform bed frame and save several hundred dollars! Platform beds are not complicated to make with the list of necessary material and some plans.
Have you been shopping for a platform bed lately? I did it last year and I was very surprised to see the prices they were asking, such as over a thousand dollars and even more. I knew they were expensive but, wow, not that much.
Wooden Storage Bed
Did you know you can make yourself one using plans and your total cost will be less that 0.00? Now we are talking about a saving!
I made a platform bed for my son and used some regular plywood to build the structure and the actual platform. Them we add some nice high quality wood to cover the sides, to go around the platform and to build the head.
We even carved some nice round openings on the side to provide room for storage under the bed. We sanded the wood and added two nice coats of lacquer all over it. It looks better than the 00 ones from the furniture store!
How to Build Your Own Platform Bed
Get Everything Ready
The first step is to get yourself a set of plans and choose which model you prefer. Thee are several models to choose from, and the fun part is that it is up to you to determine what you want.
Make a list of material needed according to your plan specifications. Usually 3/4 inch plywood works best for a platform bed. It make it sturdy but flexible.
Buy the necessary hardware, screws and brackets. This will avoid you a second trip to the hardware store.
When you go get your plywood at the lumber store, ask the person who is helping you there to plane it for you.
Make sure you got all the necessary tools for the whole project.
Get some brushes and the wood protector you need while you are there.
Bring your measurements with you. If you lumber supplier offers this service, have them cutting the plywood for you. This will make the transport easier, and will save you time and dust back home if your wood is already cut. I may also be a life saver if you don't have a skill saw at home.
Just Follow the instructions
Once you got all your material ready follow your blueprint and proceed to build the support under the bed for the platform. The plans will guide you step by steps and you can add some of your own creativity to the finishing touch.
